Presentation Format:
1-2 slides summarizing main argument of text(s) assigned for that day
1-2 Discussion of case(s) and how they illustrate the author’s main points
2-3 slides offering interpretation/critical reflection/evaluation, connections and comparisons with ideas encountered in other texts
1 slide with discussion questions which student poses to the class
Start by pulling out the main conceptual and theoretical takeaways of each text and putting them into conversation with each other (or with any of the prior texts we’ve read in the course)—where do they agree and disagree?
Which points do you find most compelling and why? What did you find confusing or needing of clarification/ expansion? Which parts of the theories work to explain the Arab uprisings, and which don’t fit? How can different elements be measured? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the methodologies employed by various authors? You can also identify points of comparison and contrast with our in-class discussions thus far.
Do not recapitulate every single detail of the reading, as students are expected to have done the reading beforehand and this will make the presentation redundant and overly long. The presentations are meant to distill the overall argument and perspective that the authors are arguing and critically analyze them.
Next, engage those main arguments from a critical perspective: what further questions does this point raise? Are there concepts that need to be better or differently defined? Does this model or theory ignore something you think is important, or collapse multiple and discrete factors into one concept or variable? Or overemphasize something which has proven not to be as important in one case or another? As the course progresses and we get into more empirical detail about individual cases of the Arab uprisings, you should use empirical points to either support or challenge authors’ theoretical models and concepts of revolution.
