Prep Discussion Using the California Health Education Standards
Health in Education
Health education is not without controversy. Because health is guided by personal, family and cultural norms, the range of behaviors is very wide. Many topics are very important though! We have seen how infection control and tactics such as handwashing made a difference in Covid. We see how obesity has become a problem even in our younger generation. As educators we must deliver neutral and helpful feedback while not singling children out or implying that you are teaching family values. The California Health Education Standards (CA HES) help you to see what is appropriate for certain ages. This week we will familiarize ourselves with it.
Along with the CA HES in California we have “The California Healthy Youth Act, which took effect in January 2016. It requires school districts throughout the state to provide students with comprehensive sexual health education, along with information about HIV prevention, at least once in high school and once in middle school.(1) This is not usually the responsibility of individual teachers and is guided by the school and district. Make sure you address these sensitive issues with your administration. Your school, or you, however may still want to integrate some of the very helpful and important topics in the CA HES so lets learn it together.
We will work with the CA Health Education Standards. This week, I just want you to be able to open the document, find the areas that are supposed to be addressed in each year and pick one that interests you.
Discussion 1
In paragraph 1, introduce yourself to the class. Tell us your major and how many teaching classes you have taken. What grade do you want to teach?
If you are not majoring in early education or child development, tell us why you are in this class.
Go to: The California Health Education Content StandardsLinks to an external site.. This is VERY similar to your book guide, Chapter 16 “Meeks Heit K-12 Health Education Guide”. The CA website has a nice overview and chart to add to your resources. Both are based on national standards. For this discussion, we will use the website.
Skim over the introduction
Go to page 9 and see the chart. Find the grade you are interested in or pick a grade. They are in the left column.
Pick one of the areas that are addressed in your grade (see a check mark) and tell us why you are picking that area. This is the top row.
Check marks not showing?? Use this link instead.Download Use this link instead.
Next week you will find a way to incorporate the area into your classroom
