You will use your knowledge of human development and assessment to complete this
assignment, as well as the following items (located in the Toolbox):
1. The Siegal Case Study
2. The Brief Diagnostic Summary section of the Guide of Case Assessment
3. The Brief Diagnostic Summary section of the Ms. B Sample Case Assessment
Specify your client from the various choices in the Siegal Case Study. You will need to indicate
why you chose the client. You must reference where you got your information to respond to the
question, i.e., define strengths perspective and apply it to your selected criteria and justify how
you would approach working with the client. Identify any ethical principles and how they apply
to this case.
A. Using the strengths and Black Perspective and your knowledge of assessment, explain
how you may approach the problems being experienced by the client. (10 points)

B. Age, gender, and race/ethnic/culture are factors that can enhance or impede mastering
developmental and life tasks. Speculate about the role that you think these variables play
for the client. You must define concepts and indicate with a theory (i.e., Erikson,
Levinson, etc.) how these concepts apply to your client. (10 points)
C. Complete a diagnostic summary on the case. To see an example, review the Brief
Diagnostic Summary section of the Ms. B Sample Case Assessment. Do not write about
Ms. B; this is only an example of how a diagnostic summary should look. You do not
have to do any diagnosing for this summary. Please review and make sure your response
corresponds to the tenets of a diagnostic summary. (15 points)
D. Selection of ego functions should apply to the identified client. Identify appropriate ego
functions demonstrated by all members of the client. Discuss how these functions are
adaptive or maladaptive. Several ego functions should be applied, and the application
should also include an example from the case that supports your selection. Limited
discussion in this area will result in a lower number of points awarded for response.
Include both maladaptive and adaptive ways these functions are applied. (20 points)
E. Identify defense mechanisms employed by the client. Discuss how these defense
mechanisms impact their lives. You will respond similarly to D. You will provide
numerous examples of defense mechanism. Using appropriate definitions, indicate if
these are maladaptive or not according to information in the case example. (20 points)
F. Diagram a genogram and ecomap of this client. Using the accepted symbols, indicate the
relationship between family members. Explain how you would use this data in
assessment and intervention activities. Please explain how genograms and ecomaps are
used in assessment and diagram three generations for the client selected. Information on
characteristics should be included in genogram. Both should be neatly presented so that
they can be easily read. Incomplete diagrams will result in fewer points awarded. You
have several opportunities to see how these are produced. You should use all appropriate
reading sources to assist you. (20 points)
G. Based on your current knowledge of the client, what would you suspect for projected ego
functioning? You are expected to predict how well your client will do in the future given
their status based on your assessment. (5 points)
