Instructions:
Listen to the following musical selection, then answer BOTH question prompts in the text box below.
Assignment Prompt 1:Write three descriptive sentences about the music (“facts”) after you listen.
List them:
1.
2.
3.
Evaluation Prompt 1:Use complete sentences and be specific. Be sure not to use reaction or judgment words in your descriptions. Tell where the fact occurs by using a timing or a reference to the relative location of the event. For example, “There is a loud outburst of trumpets just before the end.” When listening to musical selections on youtube, use video timings to be precise about WHEN you hear a fact. Always use complete sentences and avoid generalities such as “I heard a variety of instruments” or “The music went from fast to slow to fast” or “The music was sometimes loud and sometimes soft.” Facts that are too general or too vague will not receive points in assignments.
(More examples: (1) “This music sounded soft at the beginning.” (2) “At 2 minutes, this music was sharp and harsh sounding.”)
Be sure to AVOID using FEELING descriptions or judgments for your FACT statements.
Examples of incorrect statements:
“The music sounded sad at 1 minute.”
“When the trumpets entered, the music was happy.”
“The music sounded ugly from 30 to 45 seconds.”
“The music was beautiful at the end.”
Assignment Prompt 2:Now write two reaction statements about the music (“feelings”).
List them:
1.
2.
Evaluation Prompt 2:Use complete sentences and be specific. When listening to your CDs, use timings to pinpoint when the feeling occurred. ALWAYS qualify a feeling statement by referring to yourself. In other words, remember to include yourself in the statement and to state the objective element of the music that produced the response you describe.
Examples: (Note italicized and bold references to oneself)
“The music sounded sad to me at 1:30 minutes.”
“The music made me feel happy at the beginning.”
“I feel happy when I listen to the music in the middle featuring the brass instruments.”
If you would like to give a value judgment about the music, tell us why you have this opinion by describing WHY you feel that way. (Examples: “I think this music is beautiful, because it makes me feel tingly all over.” Or “ I hate this music, because I feel angry when I’m listening to it.”
