The full details:
The goal of this assignment is to analyze how autism is portrayed in the popular media and news media with respect to a neurodiversity perspective. For this assignment, you will:
Step One: Popular Media
Find a movie (full movie) or TV show (at least 3 episodes) that features an autistic character ages 6-30 in a meaningful way. The movie or TV show can be fiction or reality, and you should select one autistic character to focus on if there are multiple. Ideally, the movie or TV show should have aired within the last 5 years.
Analyze the character and the show, including:
Describe the character and their overall role in the show. What are they like? Who do they interact with? What is the purpose of the show or episodes?
How does the character relate to the neurodiversity model of autism?
Step Two: News Media
Find a news article that discusses an autistic individual in a meaningful way. The news media article should be from the last year.
Analyze the news article, including:
Describe the news article and its purpose. What information was included? What happened?
How does the person described relate to the neurodiversity model?
Step Three: Compare
Compare the movie or TV show with the news article.
How are the individuals described or shown similar?
How do the individuals described or shown differ?
Which is more in line with the neurodiversity model?
Step Four: Improve
Consider either the movie or TV show OR the news article, whichever was least in line with the neurodiversity model.
How might you modify the content to be more in line with a neurodiversity model?
Why might it be beneficial to take a neurodiversity model approach to the content?
Your paper should be 4-6 pages, double spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font with 1” margins. You are encouraged to use headers to divide your paper into clear subsections. You will be graded on:
Clarity of Analysis:
Analysis of movie or TV show, particularly displaying a clear understanding of its relation to neurodiversity
Analysis of news article, particularly displaying a clear understanding of its relation to neurodiversity
Understanding of Neurodiversity
Clear comparison of the two sources utilizing a neurodiversity framework
Applies a neurodiversity framework to suggest modifications to a source material
Displays solid understanding of the benefits of utilizing a neurodiversity framework
Writing Quality: As this is a 5000 level course, students will be held to a very high standard for written work. Papers should flow appropriately, and should be free of grammar and spelling errors.
Citations and Formatting: Papers should follow APA format. Students are expected to cite course videos (Author, Week) and course readings (Author, Year) at least 3 times each throughout the paper. This means that there should be a minimum of 7 citations (3 for course readings, 3 for course videos, and 1 for the news article you are referencing). Citations should paraphrase content, not insert long block quotes, and should use the sandwich method of citing (introduce the citation, the citation, discuss or explain the citation). For example: The neurodiversity model is often thought to have emerged from concerns related to the medical model. One such concern is the medical model’s implication that our goal should be to “cure” autism (Robison, 2017). The emerging disapproval of searching for such a “cure” drove community networking and academic research that now make up the foundations of the neurodiversity model.
Reference Page: Students should include a references page. See this informative page for APA style papers for assignments in this course.
To cite online lecture videos in their references page, students may use this format:
Creator’s Last Name, First Initial. Middle Initial. (Year, Month Day). Title of video [Video]. Website Name. URL
