After reviewing reading materials on evidence-based medicine, write a 6-8 pages paper outlining the following:
Your understanding of evidence-based medicine in your own words. 1 point.
Different kinds of evidence-based medicine, main concepts, building blocks, and questions it addresses. 2 points.
Explain clinical trials using sources provided in the textbook, readings assigned in Blackboard, and your own literature search. Provide examples of clinical trials for at least 1 type of a trial you list in this section of the paper. 2 points.
Multiple, often competing, views of evidence-based medicine among different medical providers. 1 point.
Your own view of evidence-based medicine and how you think it could be applicable or not applicable to improve quality and reduce cost of medical care. 1 point.
Latest research in this area using basic literature search conducted via databases available from UIC libraries. Be sure to summarize and analyze outcomes of your literature findings. At the graduate level, you cannot limit your literature search exercise by a mere listing of available source, or the task resembles a mechanical search process more so than information finding quest. 2 points.
Your opinion on the future of evidence-based medicine and its connection to the clinical decision support domain of knowledge. 1 point.

There is a philosophical divide among researchers and practitioners regarding evidence-based medicine, so the field remains in search of its purpose and ultimate destination. Yet there are accomplishments and a wealth of information that can be found in literature and practice, and the goal of this exercise is to get familiar with this knowledge and build your opinion about it. You are welcome to draw from your professional experience, in case you have any in the clinical information systems domain, or to rely entirely on readings.

Keep in mind that wiki/user collaborative sites such as Wikipedia and blogs are examples of non-acceptable online sources, as these are not peer reviewed and cannot be verified for accuracy. Your best bets for web-based sources are online editions of professional and academic journals, as well as government and medical informatics professional association publications.
