Argumentative Essay Assignment
Assume you are running for a political office. Write a 1000 word Argumentative essay in which you
debate a current candidate on a specific topic. Complete five tasks. 1. Present the pertinent
background information for the topic you are debating. 2. Explain your opponent’s stance on the
topic. 3. Explain why that stance is wrong. 4. State your stance on the topic. 5. Describe what you
do in regard to the topic if elected. The first four tasks must incorporate a minimum of one quotation
per task. This assignment constitutes 10 points out of a total 100 for this comp course.
Your essay will be graded on the following criteria:
1. Is the paper 1000 typed words and double spaced? (1 point)
2. Have you presented the pertinent background for the topic and included at least one quotation
for support? (1 point)
3. Have you explained your opponent’s stance and included at least one quotation for support?
(1 point)
4. Have you explained why your opponent’s stance is wrong and included at least one quotation for
support? (1 point)
5. Have you explained your stance regarding the topic and included one quotation for support?
(1 point)
6. Have you explained what you would do in regard to the topic if elected? (1 point)
7. Does your paper follow the correct MLA format? (1 point)
8. Do you have at least four separate sources listed in your works cited at the end of the paper?
(1 point)
9. How is the overall presentation of your paper? Is it structured and coherent? Is this an essay
you’d be proud to read in front of the class? Is your paper grammatically correct? Have you taken
care to avoid run-on sentences and made sure each sentence makes sense? Have you checked
for spelling errors? (1 point)
10. Has your paper been peer reviewed by three different students and are three copies of different
edited peer reviews and completed cover sheets attached? (1 point)
