Instructions
This module, you learned how to pick out details and research context. Now, you’ll practice deconstructing some visuals of your choice. You can either choose two covers included below, or one cover below and another from the New Yorker magazine archive. It’s up to you!
Step 1:
Browse the New Yorker Cover Story Archive. You will want to choose and save the cover art because the New Yorker only permits so many views before prompting a subscription (and you might get locked out). If you need another shot, open the link in another browser.
Note: You must choose a New Yorker cover from the last 6 months.
Step 2:
Research each of your two covers. Apply the different strategies you noticed throughout the module in the videos, lectures, and readings, and answer the following questions (and present/submit them however you would like)
What questions are you asking?
What are the answers to the questions?
What did you notice? What don’t you notice?
What stands out to you?
Is there symbolism?
What was going on during the time the cover was created?
Step 3:
Submit your questions and an explanation for each magazine cover. You can present the question responses and analysis however you like (much like the introduce yourself!). Makes sure you have at least three observations.
Some ideas: you can do google slides, an illustration, genial.ly, canva, drawing, an audio recording. Refer to the rubric before submitting to ensure you have met all requirements for the assignment.
