As you begin to think about and prepare for your speeches, it is helpful to see some examples of others doing speeches and to be able to understand what the strengths and weaknesses are in a presentation. This assignment also allows you to become familiar with the Oral Communication Rubric that will be used to evaluate your speeches. Write an evaluation of one of the speeches. Use the rubric to guide your evaluation. Identify and state the general purpose, specific purpose and central idea of the speech. Identify three (3) strengths the speaker displays. What did he or she do well? Support your answer with reasons. Identify three (3) weaknesses the speaker displays. What could he or she do better? Support your answer with reasons and examples. What suggestions would you give the speaker for improvement? Pretend you are the teacher or professor in the speech class for which the speaker is presenting. What feedback would you give the speaker about his or her speech? Locate and list three (3) resources you would recommend to a speaker to help him or her gain skills in public speaking. These should not be resources already located in the course. They may be websites, articles, books, videos, etc. Include at least one resource that is NOT a website. Lastly, using the Oral Communication Rubric, assign a grade to the presentation. Be aware, the rubric is based on a 50 point scale. Score the speech using the rubric and then double the score to get the grade.
