Your publishing goal is to publish a report of your systems change quality improvement project
You will likely want to select a journal that is a nursing journal that is focused on evidence-based practice, a nursing journal that is focused on mental health, or a more general nursing journal.
You need to locate a journal that will publish reports of quality improvement projects. Not all journals will publish them, so you need to review the author guidelines very carefully. If it is not clear that the journal will publish a report of a quality improvement project, you should email the journal for clarification. Also, qualitative research is not the same thing as a quality improvement project! Quality improvement research is not the same as a quality improvement project!
As you are beginning authors, you will want to select a journal that is a “gateway” journal. A gateway journal is typically at a lower ranking than a big-name journal. Gateway journals are more likely to accept a beginning author for publication and work with the beginning author. It can be very difficult to publish in a big-name journal, even for experienced authors.
As you look for a journal, review multiple journals. Then, narrow the search to three journals to explore thoroughly. Be sure to review the following for each journal: (a) aim/purpose of the journal, (b) scope of the journal, (c) copyright and open access policies, (d) acceptance rate, (e) average number of days to first decision (typically, after the first review, authors are asked to make revisions to the manuscript and resubmit, and (f) ranking.
