WEEK 7: NO READINGS, MID-SEMESTER TEST
MODULE 3: CULTURAL (AND POLITICAL) GLOBALISATION
WEEK 8: CULTURAL DIVERSITY, CULTURAL DIVIDES, OR GLOBAL CULTURE? Global culture: possible? desirable? Clash of civilisations or clash of globalisations?
The earlier forms of globalisation diffused ideas and culture from east to west, since the end of the Cold War from west to east, and today…? While east-to-west diffusion aided the rise of Europe and modernity, some see contemporary cultural globalisation contributing to a deepening civilisational divide. This week we consider the forms and impacts of cultural globalisation.
1. Is there such a thing as ‘global culture’? Is it desirable?
2. Are we witnessing a ‘clash of civilisations’ or a ‘clash of globalisations’? Explain the difference,
and its significance in foreign policy terms.
3. What politically is/isn’t driving the globalisation of culture and identity?
