Understanding issues of diversity and access is integral to larger public health aims, including the development of trust between marginalized communities and health care providers. Understanding the history and context of how (the lack of) cultural competence has affected the healthcare field is key to addressing current issues. You should be able to articulate the role that diversity and cultural awareness play in promoting high professional standards, better public health outcomes, and the historical actions that produced mistrust among marginalized communities.
Use a US-based cultural competency tool kit (assessment tools) that include best practices and standards, to address specific public health issues (mental health, hospitals, etc.).
Select an intervention and use that tool kit in determining levels of organizational cultural competency.
