Types of Choose Your Own Assignment
Journal your everyday interaction with media: Reflect on your daily use of media. How much time did you spend interacting with media? What types of media did you interact with? Why did you gravitate towards that form of media? As you progress within the course, do you interact with media in the same way? If so, why? If not, why not? This journal entry only needs to be about a page long.
Current Event Fact Check: Find a current event that relates to the criminal justice system. It should be a news article published from August 1, 2023 on. Include the link of the article, a brief summary of the article, the “spin” of the article, and a discussion of your process of fact checking. Where did you start in fact checking the information provided? What did you find? Were there mistakes? Did the “spin” or focus of the article impact your decision to select it and possibly its facts? This current event fact check only needs to be about a page long.
This week’s media obsession: Write or make a picture collage about your current obsession with a form a media. What is it? Why is it your current obsession? How much time did you spend on it? Buy a new video game and need to keep playing until you have defeated it? Find a new book that you just have to stay up all night to read? Stream a series or movies that you just spent half the weekend on? TikTok, YouTube, Instagram or others forms of social media take up hours of your day?
