This week you will finish up your research on either securing your own home network. The goal of this exercise is to begin doing research. As a security practitioner, this will be a daily task. You need to know which resources are good, and which resources are bad. You also need to document data flows, network topologies, etc. By the end of this assignment you should have some level of comfort on how to use the SMUMN library catalogs.
If designing your own home network remember to stick to your budget. This budget will drive whether you purchase new equipment or utilize some spare equipment and use open source software. Think about the need for a firewall, a forward proxy server, an IDS/IPS. Do you plan on integrating a wireless network? How do you plan on securing it? Do you plan on utilizing a mesh wireless network, or use multiple access points with different SSIDs or active channels? There is a lot to think about here.
If you are designing your own security lab, do you plan on buying new dedicated hardware or use virtualization? Do you need a mobile solution like a laptop, or do you plan on having a dedicated workstation loaded with the required tools? What tools do you plan on installing as well? Is there a need to preserve data? Again a lot of things to consider when designing your own security lab.
Please turn in a complete list of references. Make sure to follow the APA format when listing your references. Also, based on your research, create a diagram to support your plan. Your diagram can be network topology or a data flow diagram on any processes you may have defined.

You might use Visio, Omnigraffle, LucidChart or even PowerPoint to create basic shapes (squares, circles, etc.) and make a diagram to be included in your rough and final drafts.
