Choose one of the following questions. Write a definition essay. Please refer to chapter 16 in
Successful College Writing, 5 th edition. Your essay should include at least five paragraphs and at
least six to eight sentences per paragraph. It needs to support a thesis statement, incorporate topic
sentences for all paragraphs, use transitions, and use specific details or examples to support each
point. Don’t forget to title your essay.
1. Define what heritage means to Dee, Maggie, and their mother in Alice Walker’s
short story “Everyday Use.”
2. Define three aspects of Dave’s pride in Richard Wright’s short story “The Man
