This essay accomplishes two goals:
1) Reinforcing the concepts of sociological status (race, socioeconomic status, gender, sexuality, disability, rurality)
2) Practicing for Discussion posts and the Position Paper later in the semester.

For this assignment, you will review the readings from Week 1 of class:
1) The Sociological Imagination (1959) – The Promise – by C. Wright Mills
2) OpenStax Open Access Sociology Textbook Chapter 11.1 & 11.3 – Race & Ethnicity, Prejudice & Discrimination
3) OpenStax Chapter 12.1 – Sex, Gender, Sexual Orientation
4) OpenStax Chapter 9.1 – First section only – Socioeconomic Status
5) OpenStax Chapter 19.3 (“Disability” section only) – Disability
Based on these readings and lecture notes, you will write a 2-3 page double-spaced essay that answers the following questions:
In a few sentences (no more than one brief paragraph): Summarize what are “troubles” and “issues” according to Mills. How do “troubles” and “issues” help us think about the social world like sociologists?
In 1-2 sentences per term, define the following sociological status terms: race, socioeconomic status, gender, sexuality, disability, rurality.
Define intersectionality (1-2 sentences).
Choose one example related to corrections or criminal justice from class discussions/readings and:
Explain how your example has different consequences/implications/challenges for people in one of the different status groups you defined.
Name one intersectional implication of your chosen example.
In just a few sentences, explain how this status-based, sociological understanding of corrections is different than a non-status-based, non-sociological understanding. (In other words, what is the value of thinking sociologically about corrections?)
