This assignment is worth 15% of your grade. In this assignment, you are to consider the nine geographic themes of this course (Population, Gender, Development, Food, Urbanization, Globalization, Democratization, Climate Change, Water) and select one of them to write about that is a central theme of a song of your choice. Please cite the name of the song as well as the artist. Then consider the following questions as you complete your assignment:
Describe what you have learned in the course about this geographic theme (Be specific. Refer to Course Lecture material)
What is the role of the theme within the particular song? You may cite specific song lyrics to support your position. Remember that song lyrics should be properly cited.
Explain the relationship between the geographic theme and the geographic region of the song. Music is often used to give voice to inequality/injustice in society.
Finally, such issues are often addressed/combatted by forms of social action, meant here as the actions of individuals and groups/organizations who are engaged in political or cultural conflict on the basis of a shared collective identity. This can take a variety of forms (social protest, letter writing campaigns, public speakers/education, service/volunteerism, advocate for public policy, etc.). What forms of social action might you envision to help address this issue? Explain why? This is an opportunity for you to think critically about the issues and be creative in regards to possible solutions.
