Sharon Worely: Making Waves: Light and Color. After viewing the exhibition, you are assigned to write a brief EXPRESSIVE CONTENT or FORMAL ANALYSIS paper about the exhibition.
This assignment is not to literally answer the questions in a list format. Your paper can address at least most of the questions you think are important to your idea about the overall exhibition or artwork. This paper will require some research and critical thinking about the exhibition or the artwork you select. Please use the Introduction chapter, and Elements and Principals of Art.
Minimum 500 words.
These are only some suggested guidelines, but you can write your paper anyway you like.
EXPRESSIVE CONTENT
What is the title of the exhbition or the artwork (if you select to write about one of the artworks)? Who is the artist, do you know anything about the painter?
Describe what the exhibition/artwork of art looks like. (Does the imagery or color symbolize anyting to you? What objects are in the picture? Is it a landscape? Are there things/figures in the artwork? What are the things doing?
What emotions or thoughts do you experience when you look at this exhibition/artwork? Does it make you think of some idea the artist is trying to express? Explain why. Does it make you feel an emotion, such as happy, sad, upset, or calm? Explain.
Do you think there is a overall message in this artwork? What might the artist be tcommunicating to the viewer?
Explain why you selected to discuss one work of art or the exhibition as a group of things?
FORMAL ANALYSIS
Describe your first reaction to what you see.
Describe what you see. (Give a full description of the artwork or group)
Color – What colors does the artist use? – Does one color dominate? Which one? – Does the color influence the painting’s purpose or effect? How?
Texture – Look at the painting’s surface. Describe how the material was applied. – Quickly/slowly, small/brush strokes, thickly/thinly, smoothly/roughly – Describe textures that you see if carved or modeled.
How does color, texture and depth/space influence your reaction to this work of art or what you perceive to be the meaning of this work?
Are you, the viewer, above the action, part of the event, or outside of it?
