REFLECT: I concur with “Action plans should reflect the type of services that are needed and have an idea of the expected outcome of the services” because it is in line with Hatch and Hartline’s intentional school counseling guidelines in regards to determining students needs.
INQUIRE: Can you further explain what “closing-the-gap action plans” are?
SUGGEST: I encourage you to revisit Hatch and Hartline’s MTMDSS tier interventions in order to add a citation that would illustrate your example on bullying prevention efforts.
ELEVATE: What if you re-purposed “For example, after a needs assessment, the school is having problems with bullying” as “Following Trish Hatch’s MTMDSS tier based interventions, if the school is having problems with bullying, after a needs assessment, we could… citation…” for a more weighted argument?

Unlearning Harmful Beliefs and Prioritizing Qualitative Aspects: School counselors should actively unlearn harmful beliefs and biases that might affect their interactions with students. They can prioritize qualitative aspects over quantitative measures, focusing on students’ experiences rather than solely on data. By doing so, they ensure that their counseling practices are inclusive and considerate of the diverse needs and backgrounds of the students they serve.
Creating a Safe Environment for Difficult Conversations: School counselors can foster a safe and open environment for difficult conversations about power, privilege, and vulnerability. They can facilitate discussions among students and staff to address DEI-related issues. By encouraging these conversations, counselors help build trust and create opportunities for individuals to share their experiences and perspectives, contributing to a more inclusive school community.
Embracing Empathy and Continuous Learning: Counselors should actively practice empathy and learn about the experiences and challenges students from diverse backgrounds face. This involves recognizing the importance of informed empathy and being sensitive to the unique needs of different student populations. Identify ways School Counselors can improve diversity, equity, and inclusion practices.
According to ASCA school counselors recognize and distinguish individual and group differences and strive to equally value all students and groups. School counselors are advocates for the equitable treatment of all students in school and in the community. I like to say school counselors are the heart beat of the school. As in the YouTube video they spoke on building relationships with students. I believe when you build relationships with students, they are more open to telling you about their diversity and how they are feeling within the school. When we receive this information, we can better help assist our students. Whether that be academically, socially, emotionally, culturally, LGBTQ community, and so forth. I know at the school I am working at now I want to help implement cultural celebrations throughout the school year. Even running anti-bullying campaigns. Speak with teachers about implementing diversity into their lesson plans and classrooms. ASCA states that “School counselors have a professional and ethical responsibility to expand personal multicultural and social justice advocacy, awareness, knowledge, and skills to be an effective, culturally competent school counselor. School counselors work toward cultural competence and cultural humility to provide culturally sustaining school counseling.
