Project Instructions
Overview
You have two alternatives (see details below) to choose from:
1) Secure a residential wireless network.
2) Trace network flow
Choose wisely, I highly recommend you stick with your initial choice to avoid wasting your effort.
Alternative 1 – Secure Wireless Network (Service-Learning Project)
As a community service project, your main aim will be to secure a residential wireless network. The purpose of the assignment is for you to gain information about wireless networks.
You will be responsible for locating a client with an unsecure wireless network.
Your job is to provide the following services:
• Add a password of the resident’s choosing to secure his/her wireless access point.
• Add encryption to ensure only authorized users access his/her network.
• Set up and configure his/her laptops and desktops to use the network.
• Use different security methods and test everything to ensure it works.
Find a resident who is willing to participate. Once you find a client to work with, you need to contact the client and get familiar with their network equipment and their concerns. You need to be well prepared before going to their home (e.g., you have researched their specific equipment model, downloaded user manuals, and prepared a work plan). Give that work plan to the resident before you start work.
You will be rated in the following areas.
• Project Organization and Scheduling
• Performance
• Professionalism
In addition, you will be asked to write a self-reflective report that includes a log of the activities completed during the service-learning project and a self-reflection on what you learned from your service-learning experience.
• Here are some sample issues that you might want to include in your self-reflection:
o Explain, using some specific examples, how the course work helps you with your project.
o Explain, using some specific examples, how the project is helping you with your course work.
o Describe the most technically challenging problem you faced. How did you go about solving it?
o Describe the kind of feedback that has been most helpful in your project.
o Reflect on how this project is expanding your knowledge of community resources.
o List changes/alterations you would make in the project if the project were to be offered again.
o List skills/theories/techniques the course or readings should have covered.
Alternative 2 – Trace network flow
For this project, the student will select a cloud-based application that they use on a somewhat regular basis. This could be a phone, gaming, or computer application. The student will use knowledge and tools learned in class to trace the network flow from the respective user device to the host(s) and then back to their device. This trace will be used to help map out all the connection points seen as the packets travel through the local and public networks. It should include as much data as can be gathered about each device and network discovered.
The student should create a network diagram of the flow. This will require some research into the Service Providers in the flow, the application itself (what it is, who makes it, how it works), and the hosting service used.
Some of the things you will want to describe are:
What IP addresses are seen?
What does the data packet include? What physical transmission mediums are used? What Internet Service provider(s) are in the path?
Where is the application hosted? The deliverables for this project will be well-documented.
