I truly believe that since a lot of our human lives are spent around other man-made objects, technically art is all around us. The clothes that you’re wearing, the bed/chair you’re sitting on, the house that you reside in, the device by which you are reading this text, and even this response that I have created that you’re reading is a form of art. If people in this alternate society will not in any way be compensated for their efforts in art, then I believe that humanity will either perish or prosper.
Here’s what I’m thinking: if humans literally do not compensate for the art that they create, then people will become too greedy and run out of resources by spending it on themselves and not sharing with others, hence perishing all/most human life; but if humans could also just share resources in general instead of there being some kind of compensation for art, then people would, well, prosper.
Everything would be done voluntarily and no one will be paid in any way to do anything, because since I mentioned in the beginning, everything action that humans make is art, so hence people will never technically be properly reciprocated for their actions. The only way I can imagine people would get compensated by is a reaction, considering “a reaction” is not mentioned by the prompt, so people could also just be performing any form of art to create an audience and make them happy, which in turn could make the performers happy too.
For this week’s discussion imagine the following:
You do not live in our society anymore. You live in a society that is different from ours in one (and only one) aspect. In this society people that create works of art (in all its forms) are not compensated for their efforts. No one in this society creates income by creating art. No one is ever paid to dance, sing, paint, perform, or do any type of endeavor that would be considered art. Further, no one in this society would consider offering money in exchange for experiencing a work of art created by someone else.
Discussion prompts:
What impact would this one change have on American society?
How would this affect the types of artworks that are created?
Who would create artworks? Why would they do so?
