Deductive reasoning helps us explain things and events about our past, or events and situations that happened in the past.  Inductive reasoning takes what we know about the past and present and helps us predict the future based on what we know.  Strawson contends that inductive reasoning is a practical part of the human experience, deeply ingrained in our everyday practices. Strawson’s perspective emphasizes that we “ought” to rely on induction because it is necessary for making sense of the world.  I agree with Strawson. We are constantly analyzing and predicting what will happen in the future based on what we have experienced in the past.  Honestly, how else are we supposed to make decisions about the future if not based on our knowledge of the past?  However, to a certain extent, it might be prudent to look at every situation as a stand alone experience, so that you are not confusing the way things have always been, with what might be. If you always rely on on what has been, you might be missing an opportunity to see things in a new way.  So yes, inductive reasoning can be justified, but we should be ready to reassess when prudent.
