OVERVIEW
The study of student affairs leadership requires a foundational understanding of the theories and
events that have driven practice. Equally important, however, is an understanding of the
evolution of theory across time against the backdrop of the societal, political, legal, and
environmental issues that have impacted higher education as a whole.
INSTRUCTIONS
You will create an annotated timeline spanning the last century of higher education, noting the
formation and evolution of key student affairs and leadership theories, as well as the parallel
historical events that shaped both theory and practice. There is no length requirement, however,
the timeline must include a minimum of ten annotated events, and must be well researched and
properly cited. A minimum of six scholarly sources (including your textbook) must be used.
The timeline may be created in either Microsoft Word or PowerPoint but must be visually
represented as a timeline with annotations ranging from 1 to 3 paragraphs in length. Each
annotation should cover, at minimum, the following points:
 Year of event/theory/article publication
 Title of theory (if applicable)
 Credited theorist(s)/author(s)
 Concise explanation of the event, contribution, or theory (one to two sentences)
 Historical backdrop
Be sure to review the criteria on the Student Affairs: Timeline Grading Rubric before
beginning this assignment.
