Okay folks – this is an interesting one – so some background:
There are a lot of theories about developmental psychology on how we grow and how we become who we are as adults and what we become later in life.
BUT
Most Developmental researchers are focused on studying adults and then looking at how their childhood shaped how they became who they are. It is very hard to take a child use it to see how specific influences effect its life as it grows old.
Here is an example – Money experimentLinks to an external site.(This is really long but it is really amazing!) There are shorter versions on YouTube as well – Search for :”John Money Gender experiment.” Critical thinking – There are some videos however who missed the point of the tragedy. This has been resurged in the fact that gender is biological – and the same thing can happen to people who feel like they are in the wrong body – the mental anguish is almost the same as David in “the experiment!”
Now after having watched these videos and read more in the chapter, I want you to post what you feel about how much development is influenced by genetics or by the environment and explain why you feel the way you feel.
Example 1: I believe that development is influenced by both the environment and genetics, but I would say more so environment. I think things like trauma, education, relationships, home life, etc. all have the capability of causing life changing effects on a person. However I do think that an environment cannot change some things, like a gender identity. For example like in this video, the environment was not enough to convince the rhymer’s son that he was a girl. I think also that this means that the argument that you can make your kid transgender is not true as well. Maybe the parents could make their child more open to traditionally feminine or masculine characteristics, but they could not influence their child to change their entire gender identity. I would say environment is still an extremely formative part of child development though.
example 2: The video explains how gender identity is learned. David Reimer was born a boy but was raised as a girl. The environment and genetics influence our development from the time we are born. In genetics, you are either born as a boy or a girl. This is due to the sexual reproductive organs we have. Male sexes have different genetical makeup compared to female sexes. As children grow up, boys will develop differently from girls due to genetics especially when they reach the age of adolescents. This is why you can see in the video David turning back into a boy at age fourteen after he had been raised as a girl. Our environment influences our development. This is seen in the video when David was raised as a girl between birth and to age of fourteen. David’s mother gave birth to two boys and during David’s circumcision, there was a mistake. His penis was destroyed and his mother later raised him as a girl. David was raised in an environment where he was made to believe he was a girl. Genetics and the environment can influence our development.
