Interprofessional Collaboration and Nursing Theory Interprofessional Collaboration Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) has been shown to be critical to positive healthcare outcomes (Verhaegh et al., 2017). Communication is key to effective IPC, and team members need to have a shared vision for a full partnership to exist (Zideck & Medland, 2020). Some ways IPC is used include clinical rounds, policy development, and quality-improvement initiatives. Nursing practice issues can both affect and be affected by IPC. A breakdown in patient care effectiveness may be an effect of the negative side of nursing practice issues, while the use of IPC pay provides solutions to the issues. Conceptual Frameworks, Models, and Theories to Guide Nursing Kearney-Nunnery (2020) identifies several nursing conceptual frameworks, models, and theories used to shape and define clinical nursing practice. The terms conceptual model, conceptual framework, and paradigm are used interchangeably. A conceptual model is a set of relatively abstract and general concepts that address the area of interest. Chapter 2 in Kearney-Nunnery (2020) explains the well-known theories that are applied to many disciplines outside of nursing, including Maslow’s theory of human motivation and hierarchy of basic human needs, Erikson’s eight stages of man, Piaget’s theory of cognitive development, Kohlberg’s theory of moral development, and Systems Theory. In Chapter 3, Kearney-Nunnery (2020) explains conceptual frameworks in nursing; the best-known ones are by King, Levine, Neuman, Roy, Orem, Rogers, and Johnson. Middle-range theories are also covered in Chapter 3. Middle-range theories are often the most useful to nurses because they are narrower in scope and show easier to measure outcomes. The metaparadigm of nursing, presented by Jacqueline Fawcett, combines four essential elements that define the nursing discipline. The conceptual components include person, environment, health, and nursing (Kearney-Nunnery, 2020).
