In this project, you will compare the three different performances of the third movement of “Winter” linked below. Discuss them, comparing tempo, dynamics, and rubato. What aesthetic impression does each performance leave? How do the performances reflect the program? (Have Unit 14 open for reference.) Do you have a favourite or least favourite performance? Why?

The third movement of “Winter” falls into three sections. The first starts at the beginning. The second is at “The Sirocco”, where most performances slow down. The third is “The North wind and all other winds”. Present your findings by section. So, discuss how the three recordings fare with the opening section. Then do the same for the middle section, then the final section. The grouping of the recordings, below, should make this easy.

One other point. The instruments used in Vivaldi’s time were slightly different in construction to their modern equivalents. Even the bows were a different size and slightly different shape to today’s bows. As a result, the sound of those older instruments was different. Since the early-1980s, there has been a rise in popularity of so-called “period instrument” orchestras, where the musicians are playing these original instruments or modern replicas of the instruments of Vivaldi’s time. Performance 1 uses period instruments, the other two use modern instruments. If you can hear the difference, that might also be something worth commenting on.
