Formatting requirements:
▪ Approximately 3 pages, double-spaced,
• Include a brief introductory paragraph that includes your thesis statement (i.e. what view will you
ultimately defend?),
▪ Include two short quotes, one from each primary text (i.e., one from Locke’s Second Treatise and
one from Hobbes’s Leviathan – both are on BB under Readings). Any citation method is fine.
▪ Insert page numbers into document (please don’t forget this!)
Using the course material we’ve covered so far (please avoid consulting material external to the course),
describe both Hobbes’ and Locke’s views on the state of nature. How are their positions similar? How are
they different? What is the best thing to be said for Hobbes’s position? What is the best thing to be said
for Locke’s? Finally, what do you think? Do you agree with one of their views, or is there a better position
they did not consider? Explain.
