For this project you will choose a particular type of transnational crime. You will then create a video in which you simulate testifying in front of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Here is an example of a real-life testimonial. If you like you can have someone question you as part of your video, but it is fine just to do opening remarks and skip the questioning part.

Before you begin video production: Write the text of your testimony just like you would a written policy assignment. You’ll need to work from a transcript with citations for your sources. Remember, you should not take anything from a source word-for-word without putting it in quotation marks, citing it, and referring to it in the References List. Testimony before a committee like this needs a high standard so any hint of plagiarism, and that is not good. Focus on paraphrasing rather than quoting – because it’s supposed to be your own words anyway. You can share the thoughts of others (cite them) but most of this needs to be in your words. For example, “John Mayer suggests that …” (Mayer 2020, 17). You would read the “John Mayer” part but not the citation. Any questions about this, ask me.
Your video presentation should be ten to fifteen minutes in length, demonstrate an understanding of the issue an awareness of the challenges to addressing it, and an ability to communicate it effectively. Do not go over the 15 minutes. It’s a skill you are learning to be able to compose within limits. As of March 15, 2021. Classroom Support offers this guidance – see below and the three screenshot attachments.
I am attaching several screenshots showing where the Kaltura tool can be accessed on classroom textboxes for a Discussions post, Assignment, or other area. Once in the Kaltura popup tool, there are three primary options for adding media.
-The Media Upload option can be used if you already have a video or audio file on your computer that needs to be uploaded and added.
-The Express Capture option can be used if you want to record a video of yourself and add it.
-The Kaltura Capture option, requires downloading an extra software program, but can be used to record a video of your computer screen and add it.
Do a dry run for this assignment well before it is due to make sure the technology is working for you. Just read something for 10 minutes and then try to upload it in the assignment folder. You can call it “test” and I will ignore it when I do the grading. Our classroom assignment folders will accept multiple submissions, so you can then just upload the “real thing” when you are ready.
1. Submit the video as an .mp4 file.
2. Submit the transcript as a Word document. You need a References List as the last page. Your citation style for the class is Chicago 16th Author-Date.
There are a couple of ways to create the video file. It should be an .mp4 file. If you try another kind of file extension, it might not work and will be very frustrating as you try to upload it. In this assignment folder, you can see the “attachments” section. In the “record video” tab, if you have a microphone and video on your computer, you can use the classroom recording video. That’s one way.
Another way to do the video is to do it on your phone – but be warned. Those files are really, really big. You’d probably have to then send it to yourself via email, get a Google link or something like that, and then upload the link.
