CASE STUDY: Your patient SW has a recent
tracheostomy due to throat cancer. She is English speaking but currently
is unable to communicate verbally due to the surgery. She was recently
transferred to your nursing home for rehabilitation speech services. Her
current vitals are BP= 142/78, pulse = 78, R= 16 and regular, T= 98.6,
oxygen saturation =98% room air. She is A&O x4 and currently
communicates using a head nod. You were able to identify that her pain
level is a 4 (1-10 scale).
SW’s history includes previous smoking
-1 pack of cigarettes a day, occasional use of alcohol, BMI within
normal limits. She is able to eat by mouth and has received tracheostomy
teaching including cleaning and site care prior to admission to the
nursing rehabilitation center.
