As a teacher, your classroom will have students who are functioning on a variety of developmental levels. It is important that teachers have extensive knowledge about developmental domains, including physical, cognitive, language, and social-emotional, and have strategies to support development within those developmental domains in the classroom.
Part 1: Define Developmental Domains
Using the “Developmentally Appropriate Activities” template, define each developmental domain and provide at least four examples of milestones that fall under each domain for the following age ranges: birth-2 years, 3-4 years, 5-6 years, and 7-8 years.
Part 2: Design Developmentally Appropriate Instruction
Select one age between birth-preschool and one grade level between K-Grade 3 as well as a theme that is appropriate for each age/grade. For each of the selected ages/grades, complete Part 2 of the “Developmentally Appropriate Activities” template by creating one activity for each developmental domain that relates to the selected theme and is developmentally appropriate for each age/grade. Include the following for each activity:
Objective/goal
Activity description
Rationale for how the activity is developmentally appropriate and how it supports the developmental milestones.
One way to differentiate the activity for students at various developmental levels such as additional resources, technology tools, etc.
One way to modify the activity for students with specific needs. Examples of specific needs are vision impairment, sensory disorder, ADHD, autism, hearing impairment, etc.
