Negative stress has multiple effects on overall well being. Stress lowers the ability of the immune system which can make people sick if they cannot fight off an infection. Stress also increases the blood pressure which can affect your muscles or organs that need blood. The muscles also tighten and constrict due to stress which can cause muscle aches or physical discomfort.
According to the American Psychological Association, “Muscle tension is almost a reflex reaction to stress — the body’s way of guarding against injury and pain.” The APA also states that, “Chronic stress causes the muscles in the body to be in a more or less constant state of guardedness.”
Appetite changes may also occur because of high stress. Someone can either lose their appetite or gain an overactive appetite which can lead to over or undereating. Diet helps regulate the energy in your body and feeding it the right nutrients helps the immune system, heart, and overall function.
Sleep lowers the stress and maintains your energy level when needed for the day. If you are stressed and do not get enough sleep, you will not have enough energy for your normal tasks the next day.
For me, my diet is influenced when I’m stressed. My appetite goes away when I’m really stressed because my stomach starts the constrict and it hurts so I don’t feel the desire to eat. My sleep schedule is something that I prioritize, so I haven’t had much issues with stress due to not getting enough sleep.
