An Exercise in the Clinical Application of Logic Theory
This paper is meant to be a short (5-page limit) logical, philosophical argument about a healthcare issue for which you have a strong opinion.  This issue could be drawn from health policy, advanced nursing practice healthcare delivery, a need for quality improvement or access to care within health care systems, health care reform, inter-professional collaboration, etc. You will begin with a powerful statement comprised of one sentence.  You will search the literature to identify how this topic has been theoretically and conceptually presented in the nursing and healthcare literature, including empirical evidence that supports both the pros and cons of your position.  An adapted version of The Toulmin Model of Argument (2003) developed by British philosopher Stephen Toulmin, will be used as a guideline for the process of constructing your argument.
The following are some examples of argument statements:
“All pregnant patients receiving federally funded health care should be given the option of a Nurse Midwife as their provider for prenatal care, because maternal patient outcomes have shown improvement when care is provided using this model of delivery”
“Medicare health insurance system should be available to all adults over 50 years, because patients over 50 but younger than 65 cannot afford to meet their health care needs”
Required Outline for paper:
Part one:
1. Clearly provide your argument statement in the one sentence format as described above and in module material.
2. Correctly label all parts of the argument statement with the correct parts of the Toulmin model (Claim, Data, Warrants, Backing,) after your research add rebuttals, qualifiers
3. Why did you choose this argument/issue?
Part two:
Identify/group your evidence, be sure to identify which “type” of evidence (warrants or backing) then use a subheading of pros-and discuss the evidence -based (literature) especially how it supports your argument.
Then use a subheading of cons- review the evidence (again identify which are warrants or backing) and discuss how it argues against your issues. Also offer rebuttals to these cons, which should also come from literature.  Add Warrants (culturally held values, beliefs, societal held norms) and backing (evidence-based facts from reliable sources such as: national organizations such as CDC, AHA, NIH, etc.)
Part three:
Summarize be sure to address all aspects listed on the grading rubric.  What did you learn from this exercise?
