After reading through each group’s annotated bibliography, your assignment this week is to
revisit the topics/models/theories paper from Week 1 and re-evaluate how those items are or
are not showing up in the larger literature. Keep in mind that you now have immediate access to
a large number of articles that have already been summarized for you by the different groups
over the past few weeks.
This assignment differs from your Week 1 paper in two main ways. First, this assignment asks
for your opinion, in addition to asking you to support your opinion through inclusion of peerreviewed research. Second, this paper builds on the first paper by allowing you to incorporate
what you originally found by reading through the textbook’s index for example, but goes beyond
that by asking you to connect the various theories, models, topics, concepts, etc. that are
mentioned in the various chapters and articles, with current research to see how those theories,
models, topics, and concepts are actually being applied by other researchers.
For this paper, you are going to put together an APA style (7th ed) formatted research paper of
at least 3, but not more than 5 pages (of body text) that outlines how the topics you identified in
Assignment 1 are (or are not) showing up in all of the group based research that’s been done.
You can structure your paper however you prefer, but you must clearly convey your original
topics and the context where they’ve been applied in cyberpsychology-related research over the
past few years in particular. You can certainly cite old studies that talk about the various
theories when they were first introduced to the field of psychology (e.g., transference might be
from Freud’s time) but how it’s being applied now is what’s important to focus on (e.g.,
Suler’s 2016 book incorporates transference to explain human-computer interaction).
In addition to what you found during the early part of the class, you can incorporate what other
groups have found in their research over the past few week as well. If there is a lack of research
from the annotated bibliographies and from the various summaries from the past few weeks, go
ahead and search the literature a bit further, expanding your search parameters as needed,
trying to find where your chosen topics tend to be showing up in relation to cyberpsychology. If
you still can’t find more information, perhaps go a bit outside of cyberpsychology, or, speculate
as to why your topics/etc. might be absent from the current literature (e.g., the theory you liked
was debunked and no one wants to talk about it anymore).
* Plagiarism Statement for Assignment 5:
1. You are allowed to self-plagiarize your paper from Assignment 1 (this one time only!). If you
wrote something particularly good in that first paper, keep it and don’t try to rephrase what
you’ve already written, and no need to quote yourself.
2. If any of the groups have written up a summary in their annotated bibliography on a topic you
can use in your paper, then great–that was one purpose of doing all that work! However, please
make sure you cite the actual research article but also be sure to cite your classmate as well.
Here’s an example of how to cite a discussion board post in your references section, but in-text,
you should cite any research as follows (using Suler’s 2016 text as an example): Suler (2016),
as cited in Red Team (2020).
It is expected that you will have at least 5 (but probably many more) peer-reviewed journal
articles cited (in addition to any non-peer reviewed journal article sources) in your paper.
