Word Count 1200-1500 words (about 4-5 pages)
In-text citations are required.
Argumentative Essay: Carefully/rigorously defend, refute, or extend the author’s ideas – their main assertions, their main arguments, or their support for the premises of their main arguments. Argumentative essays cannot be mere reports. All argumentative essays must do two basic tasks and one main task:
Basic Tasks
Explicitly analyze the author’s argument – spell out their premises and the form of reasoning they use to derive their conclusions.
Determine the validity, inductive strength, or quality as a theory choice argument of the author’s argument.
Main Tasks Your essay must do at least one of these. If you are refuting an idea, then you must not also defend or extend the same idea.
Defend Provide additional evidence or arguments that strengthen the original argument, refute a counterargument against the author’s argument, or present independent arguments for the conclusion of the author’s argument.
Refute Prove that one or more of the essential premises of the author’s argument are false, prove that the argument does not meet a logical standard, or directly prove that the conclusion of the author’s argument is false.
Extend Provide your own addition to the author’s ideas (a new application of their idea or a new implication of their idea that you think is true) and (a) make sure it’s consistent with the author’s original ideas, and (b) provide your own arguments for it.
