Final Assignment–Research Paper
The paper must be four to five double spaced pages in length excluding title and reference pages. You should begin your work with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement. You will be required to choose one of the three topics listed below. In your paper you want to be sure to address your assigned topic with critical thought and end with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis statement. A minimum of three scholarly sources is required and the paper must follow APA format.
The topics are as follows:
1) What are Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) as described in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010? How are they similar to HMOs? How are they different? Describe some of the multiple efforts around the country to establish ACOs and report on their status. What are the expected benefits to the health care system from the ACO model? What are the challenges or obstacles
2) What changes did the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 make to the Medicaid program? What did the Supreme Court say about those changes in 2012? Explain the choices faced by the States as a result of the ruling and the pros and cons of these choices? Provide a summary of what all States have done and describe the choice New York State made and why you think they did so?
3) Nationalized or what some like to call Socialized Medicine has been promoted as the solution for improving cost, quality and access in the United States. Often we read about Canada, Germany or England as examples where national health care works. Select three countries other than the U.S. and describe how their system is organized and financed and how they have demonstrated outcomes in terms of cost, access and quality. You might also want to add how the country’s residents and health care providers feel about their health care system? What can we learn from the experience of other nations?
