In phase 1, there is a buildup of tension and hostility in the relationship. The eventual abuser becomes increasingly negative toward the victim. This avoidance can be interpreted as a threat to leave, which triggers increased oppressiveness, jealousy, and possessiveness.
Phase 2 is when the actual battering occurs.
Phase 3 is considered the “honeymoon phase” in which the abusive partner attempts to convince the victim of their remorse. In this phase, the abuser pleads for forgiveness and makes extraordinary efforts to be kind and solicitous. The help of friends or family members might be requested to convince the victim to stay with the abuser. This cycle of violence is the pattern of the abusive relationship because the abuser who successfully navigates the honeymoon phase, convincing their partner to return, will eventually experience the same buildup of tension that started the pattern.
