This week, you will be looking at the contemporary scientific clinical evidence relating to your plant, as well as any relevant safety considerations.
Part I
Find one study relevant to the clinical use of your herb. Please focus on primary/original research (www.pubmed.gov is a great place to start), and provide a synopsis of the study following the guidelines below. Please use human clinical studies, unless you absolutely cannot find any human studies. If you find a study that you would love to read but that isn’t available open-access or via the NYCC library, you can order the article via NYCC interlibrary loan.
Note the study design:
– population studied (3 points)
– the intervention used (specific dose, extraction ratio where relevant, method of application/use, duration of use) (4 points)
– what control or comparison was used (3 points)
– the outcomes being measured & how often they were measured (3 points)
– the results of the study (include whether they were statistically significant) (5 points)
Part II
Additionally, use two or more authoritative sources to review the safety information for your plant. Random blogs on the internet and/or commercial websites do not qualify as authoritative sources :). Use only sources that you would trust as a clinician. Your textbooks and/or the Natural Medicines Database (we have free access via the NYCC library) are great places to search. (12 points)
