This should be a fun posting week. Organic acids can be thought of as a CBC in functional medicine or used very sparingly for very difficult cases. Using as much detail as you can, illustrate for us an example of a patient that you’d like to see the organic acids test used with. I’ll go first. A 21 year old female with severe migraine headaches has her headaches reduced by removing gluten from her diet yet she is still suffering. The frequency and the expression of the headaches has changed but she still has them. Her blood work is pretty boring even according to optimal levels. Adrenal stress test is within normal limits. Fatty acids are within normal limits. MRIs and neurology visits reveal no abnormalities of the brain or pituitary. She has gained weight over the last several years and is now 80 pounds overweight. Now a recent college graduate, she is frustrated. Her diet is whatever she can find that is gluten-free (and corn and dairy free). No supplementation so far has shown any major success. Prudent detoxification programs in various levels of aggressiveness and medications have not changed her symptoms. Her bloodwork and urinalysis can be found at MILE1. She is a candidate for an organic acids panel in my practice.
