Mr. David Thornton is the newest member of the Board of Trustees at MLKCC. When the governor’s assistant called to ask if he would be interested in an appointment to the Board of MLKCC, he responded with an enthusiastic, ‘Yes.’ While he had not had any communication with the Board chair or the college president, he was notified that his first meeting of the new college year would take place in a week.
Mr. Thornton owns a catering service and had catered several events at the college. He assumed that this relationship with the college had been looked into and because the governor’s assistant did not mention it, he did not feel that the matter was important.
At the Board meeting, the chair introduced Mr. Thornton and welcomed him to the Board. Reluctant to speak, as this was his first board meeting, Mr. Thornton had concerns about one agenda item, the dismissal of several college administrators. His primary concern was that the personnel records, including confidential evaluations by the president, were discussed in this public forum, The Board voted to accept the recommendations of the president and dismissed all of the named employees. Mr. Thornton abstained from voting.
So disturbed by all of this that Mr. Thornton called the local newspaper and discussed his concern. He felt it was his obligation to bring this matter to the attention of the public. Of course, the entire Board was furious and asked the lawyer for the Board to find out what authority, if any, the Board had to discipline Mr, Thornton.
