Arvo Pärt is a composer who uses elements of ancient music and minimalism to create a unique style that is simple yet modern. Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten was written by Pärt in memory of the great 20th century British composer Benjamin Britten. It is based on the simple idea of a descending minor scale played at different speeds by the various instruments.

World Music: An Introduction
World music refers to music that is not traditionally European or “Western.” There are many beautiful and amazing-sounding instruments that are used in cultures around the world. These instruments are not the ones we typically see in an orchestra, but they are being incorporated more and more in music of modern composers with a desire to bring about an awareness of music from around the globe. For our last essay, you will be listening to some of these instruments and will be discovering interesting details about one of the instruments on which you are drawn to do research.

Choose one of the examples and write a 20-22 line essay (approximately one double-spaced page with a 12, Times New Roman font), using your own words about the instrument’s location of origin and development, and explain how it is used in a cultural context.
