For this assignment you are asked to reflect upon the ways in which
Hindu and Buddhist images and ideas have become a part of American pop
culture. Students are assigned to find something—whether it be a meme, a
gif, a song lyric, an album cover, or whatever—that uses Hindu or
Buddhist material (for example, Jimi Hendrix’s album, Axis: Bold as Love, features a picture of Jimi as the god Krishna in an iconic scene from the Bhagavad Gita (and,
obviously, don’t use this example!!)). With your image/meme/lyric in
hand, write a 300-word reflection essay on it. Why does this image
exist? What is its significance? And what does it say about the
relationship between Indian traditions and American pop culture?
