Assignment 2: MARC Records
This assignment has two parts.
Part I: Comparing Full Records and MARC Records (6 points)
Accompanying this assignment are two copies of the same record (The organization of
information, third edition, 2009) taken from the Library of Congress catalog
(https://catalog.loc.gov/) which have different ways of identifying fields. One uses labels to
designate field names, the other uses MARC tags (3 digits). You are to fill in the table below,
using data from the two records that corresponds to the field content in the first column.

Part II: Modifying the Record (14 points)
In Part II, you are asked to modify an existing record. In this case, it is a copy of the MARC
version of the record you gathered data from in Part I.
Setting: It is some time in the future. Dr. Joudrey has asked you to join him in updating the
textbook, “The organization of information.” You have been asked to become the second author
2
for the 7 th edition. You also want to be the person who creates the new catalog record for the
book as well as its co-author. In Part II of this Assignment, you are to create that catalog entry.
Procedure for Modifying the Record:
Modify the following fields, making sure to keep the punctuation and subfield tags as similar as
possible to those in the existing record. Also, when indicators are used to further define the
fields, make sure that appropriate indicators (two single digits following the three-digit MARC
tag) are used. Although there have been other intervening editions, you will be using a copy of
the record for the third edition (2009) as a base for your modification. Please note that a pipe
character (|) was used to represent a subfield delimiter in this example. Depending on the
system used, delimiters may be represented as a dollar sign ($), a pipe character (|), or a
double dagger (‡).
