All music compositions are made up of musical ideas. This assignment asks you to identify the two music ideas that make up the piece you will hear and see performed in this video of Handel’s “See, the Conqu’ring Hero Comes.”
First, listen to the entire work. It lasts from timing 0:07 to 3:06.
Once you have listened to the entire work, listen to these two musical ideas that are used to create this work. Notice how many seconds each idea lasts as well as the musical phrasing.
Idea A timing 0:07 to 0:21
Idea B timing 0:35 to 0:48
Listen again to the work and jot down the idea that you hear, its timing (for example: 0:07 to 0:21) and what instruments are playing each time. Remember how long each idea lasts. For example: A 0:07 to 0:21, A 0:21 to 0:34, B 0:35 to 0:48, A 0:49 to 1:02. Note that you will have several more hearings of the ideas than just AABA.
Once you have written down the ideas, ask yourself if there is a pattern to the idea letters you have written down. What is that pattern? Remember, look for a simple pattern.
Report on what you heard. How is this piece unified? What gives this piece variety?
