The main topic here: enzymes and energy!
ENZYMES: You have learned about enzymes and enzymatic reactions. Enzymes are the molecular scissors that chop our food up into smaller parts that we can use. We’ve discussed:
lipases, which break down fats
proteases which break down proteins
amylase which breaks down sugars
ENERGY: We’ve also discussed the concept of a calorie(chapter 4), which essentially how much potential energy is in any given item of food. We saw that walking at a normal pace burns about 220 calories per hour. If you google a food item, you can get a rough estimate of how many calories that food has. Then you can divide the number of calories in a food item by 220 to figure out how many hours you’d need to walk to burn that food off!
Discussion Assignment
With this information at hand, I want you to:
Tell us your favorite food.
Google average number of calories in that food.
Calculate how many hours you need to walk to burn one serving of that food off.
Describe all of the ingredients in that food, then pick ONE ingredient in that food item and the enzyme that would be used to break down that ingredient.
Respond to one of your classmates, and pick an ingredient in their favorite food to assign an enzyme:molecule relationship to. Make sure it’s not the one ingredient they’ve already chosen.
Example Post (copy/paste this format and fill it out for yourself):
My Favorite Food: Liver and onions
Number of Calories per Serving: 330
Number of hours to burn off one serving: 330/220 = 1.5 hours
Ingredients: Liver, onions, cooking oil
My ONE chosen ingredient: Liver
Enzyme to breakdown my ONE chosen ingredient:Protease
