It can seem that almost anyone, in certain conditions, can be said to be suffering from some kind of “mental illness,” or SMAT. For the purposes of this assignment, you will be both the subject and the object of inquiry. In a 7-8 page double-spaced paper, please do the following:
1. Introduction (about a quarter of a page)
2. Use your Pre-Work from Week 1 to describe yourself in detail, especially in terms of your “symptoms.” (about 3/4 page)
3. Use your Pre-Work from Week 2 to “diagnose” yourself. Name your “disorder.” This should be something that you actually do, but that is not listed anywhere (such as in the DSM) as an actual diagnosable disorder. Do not write about an actual DSM diagnosis/disorder. (about 3/4 page)
4. Evaluate epidemiological factors, including socio-economic status, gender, race, age, and marital status. Cite pertinent studies, such as those by Faris & Dunham, Hollingshead & Redlich, and so on. (about 2 pages)
5. Evaluate how well each of the 4 major models of causation—the biomedical/biopsychiatric model, stress model, and both interactionist models—explain what caused your “condition”. Describe precisely how each of these apply (or not) to your case. (about 2 pages)
6. Discuss the politics involved in the creation and use of DSM, especially with respect to how this impacts your “diagnosis” and treatment. (about 1 page)
7. Using Karp (from Week 4), possibly also considering Societal Reaction Theory, discuss how your “diagnosis” might impact your identity. (about half a page) (2 points)
8. Conclusion (about a quater a page)
