1. Summary: Describe the following in your own words:
<
a. The purpose of the study. What is the current gap in the literature? Why do the authors
<
say the current study is needed?
<
b. The main variables / constructs that are being studied. Include the predictors and
<
criteria.
<
c. The study’s hypotheses and the logical and theoretical arguments that the authors use
<
to justify their hypotheses. Why do the authors hypothesize what they hypothesize? If
<
there are many hypotheses, try to summarize them in a few sentences.
<
d. The study’s method. How was the study conducted? Who participated? How were the
<
variables measured? You do NOT need to discuss the data analyses used.
<
e. The study’s main findings. Which hypotheses were supported? In your own words,
<
what are the important takeaways?
<
2. Reflection: Provide thoughtful commentary on the article. You’re not required to answer
<
specific questions because you will want to comment on different things. Please make sure to
<
discuss at least 3 different things in this section. Here are some questions that will give you a
<
chance to demonstrate critical thinking:
<
a. How important / relevant is the study?
<
b. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the article?
<
c. To what extent are the study’s findings generalizable to other contexts?
<
d. What is a way you could extend the findings of this study with a study of your own?
<
e. To what extent are your personal experiences consistent or not consistent with the
<
findings?
<
f. Do you agree with the authors’ conclusions and why?
<
You can also answer the following questions, but they might not give as much opportunity
<
to show critical thinking.
<
g. Why are you interested or not interested in this topic?
<
h. What about the article did you find particularly intriguing or interesting and why?
<
i. How does the article relate to topics we discussed in class?
<
3. Include the APA style reference of the article you chose.
<
4. Use proper spelling and grammar throughout.
<
How the Assignment is Graded
<
Your summary section will be graded on how well you demonstrate understanding of the article.
<
If you use excessive quotes or make vague statements (“Biodata is data about oneself.”), it will
<
be harder for me to determine with certainty that you have a good understanding of the content.
<
To receive a high score, your summary should clearly describe the purpose, method, and
<
conclusions of the article in your own words.
<
Your reflection section will be graded on the depth of your comments. I want you to demonstrate
<
critical thinking. If your comments are too surface-level (“I liked that the article was easy to
<
read.”) it is difficult for me to determine that you critically thought about the article. To receive a
<
high score, your comments should thoughtfully analyze the content of the article (“My
<
experience with abc issue is consistent with xyz finding because…”). The more detail you
<
provide, the better.
<
Your APA style citation of the article you chose will be graded based on its adherence to the
<
APA style.
