According to the Dickinson College Library website (“Film Criticism”),
“Film criticism is the comparison, analysis, interpretation, and/or evaluation of films. There are two different types of publications that offer opinions about films: Academic criticism by film scholars that appears in scholarly journals. Journalistic film reviews that appear in newspapers and other popular media.”
Both academic and journalistic publications analyze and review films, albeit with somewhat different goals: film analyses and film reviews are not the same. However, this distinction between them does not indicate which publication ranks higher in terms of importance (it does not say that academic publications are more important than journalistic publications).
As such, the questions for this Discussion Post (DP) are as follows:
Which type of publication – academic or journalistic – do you think is more influential and/or important in the public’s perception of a film? In your opinion, which publication’s review of a film would be more significant to the writer/director, and why?
After posting your response, be sure to reply to at least two (2) classmates’ posts to receive full credit for this DP.
