I am in Normal Speech and Language disorders class for speech-language pathology. Each week we have to do discussions on prompts my professors provide. discussions should be 1-2 BASIC paragraphs. Oral language acquisition comes naturally for approximately 90-95% of all children. However, all children must be taught to read and write. Reading parallels oral language development and involves competency in phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, reading fluency, and comprehension. Children in third grade (in the U.S.) must be fluent readers and comprehend what was read. Speech-language pathologists play a significant role in teaching phonological/phonemic awareness and decoding skills. The purpose of this discussion is to understand the relationships between oral language and literacy (i.e. written language).
