“Application of the MORAL Model
As a nurse and a provider, it was hard to read about the pain and suffering that Dax endured following his tragic accident. Ethical and moral dilemmas can occur in the healthcare setting each day. This can lead to moral distress with the healthcare staff, including the nurses involved (Rainer et al., 2018). The moral dilemma between Dax requesting to stop treatment to allow him to die and his mother and doctors keeping him alive against his will could have possibly been resolved using the MORAL model.
The first step in the MORAL model is to identify and define any issues pertaining to the ethical dilemma. In this step the opinion of Dax and his mother would be taken into consideration. Dax’s opinion was to stop medical treatment and allow him to die comfortably. His mother unfortunately became his power-of-attorney and followed through with the opposite of what he requested. This took aware the patient’s autonomy (Munson, 2014). This step would also include the opinions of the healthcare staff involved with his treatment, who also agreed with his mother’s opinions prior to advancing to further steps of the model.
The second step in the MORAL model is to outline and thoroughly examine all possible options. An extensive list would be created to evaluate the pros and cons of the opinions that were stated by the involved parties. The purpose of this step is to comprehend all available options for Dax’s treatment. This step does not entail making a final decision yet.
The third step in the MORAL model is to attempt to resolve the dilemma. This can be achieved by applying the basic nursing ethical principles to each option from the pros and cons list. The physicians who sided on the opinion of his mother were trying to follow the principles of beneficence. They were trying to act for the benefit of the patient. Unfortunately, keeping the patient alive and avoiding further harm was decreasing Dax’s overall wellbeing (Varkey, 2021). The dignity and integrity of all parties involved need to be maintained (Haahr et al., 2020). The best option should be decided based on the views of those involved in the dilemma.
The fourth step in the MORAL model is to implement the option that was chosen. Careful details explaining the new option would be created for all parties to clearly understand.
The fifth and final step in the MORAL model is to evaluate each of the previous steps in the model. In this step, it needs to be ensured that all parties involved can follow through with the chosen option. If this is unable to be achieved, the model may need to be used again to determine a second decision, starting back at the first step.
Looking at the case with Dax and the parties involved was an example of how the MORAL, model along with the ethical principles, could be used to determine a moral dilemma.
