Purpose: Paying careful attention to any text’s language and rhetorical strategies enables you to construct more fully developed and compelling literary arguments, regardless of your critical orientation. In this essay, you will be asked to demonstrate your close reading and analytical skills, and your command of Shakespearean rhetorical devices, syntax, and structure.
Format: Essays must be 3-full pages, typed-double-spaced, in 12-pt. Times New Roman font with 1” margins. Use correct MLA format for quoting (only in-text(no outside sources), summarizing, and paraphrasing. You must include a Works Cited page.
Writing Task: Select a passage from Hamlet, Prince of Denmark that resonates with you and write an original analysis addressing the significance of that passage. That means your thesis statement should reveal your perspective about the significance of the passage you choose to analyze, and your entire essay should support that thesis statement. Utilize explication skills in order to delve deeper into the text.
Tips: Quote from the passage like this: (p. 1816-17; 1832). For your assignment, your Topic Sentence should announce the argument of the paragraph or the significance of the passage: “In this passage, Shakespeare emphasizes…” or “… introduces the idea that…” or “…characterizes [whomever] as a [whatever] person” (5.2.110-115). *Include the entire passage (10-20 lines) at the top of your essay (single-spaced).
Assignment Guidelines: Your thesis should express an insightful argument that you can thoroughly explore and discuss in a clear, concise, unified, and articulate manner. Illustrate or support your observations and assertions with numerous textual examples and details, incorporating brief quotations into your paragraphs. Essays that simply summarize the passage will not receive a passing grade.
